HELP!! My Due date is coming up in A WEEK! WHAT DO I DO??

Your due date is next week… and baby’s still chilling? Don’t panic! In this funny yet reassuring read, Doula Jannah shares what to do (and what not to do) when your due date is near but labour seems to be on vacation. With real stories, research-backed tips, and a gentle reminder that sometimes your baby — or your heart — just isn’t ready yet.

You’ve reached that point. The apps are telling you, “Any day now!” The aunties are texting, “Still haven’t popped ah?” Your mother-in-law is suggesting pineapple juice, and your bestie is sending you every “labour-inducing smoothie” on TikTok.

And yet… baby seems to be lounging in there, refusing to pack up and leave the cosy womb apartment.

So what do you do when your due date is a week away and nothing’s happening?

Let’s take a deep breath (yes, even if your bladder is being used as a trampoline).

First — Due Dates Are Just GUESSES

That “estimated due date” (EDD) is based on a 40-week calculation from your last period — assuming a textbook 28-day cycle. Which most of us do not have.

So before you panic, remember: only about 4–5% of babies are actually born on their due date. (Yes, you read that right. Research from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists confirms this!)

The rest? They come when they’re ready — sometimes fashionably late, like your friend who always arrives at brunch after the food’s gone cold.

Your baby isn’t stalling; they’re finishing up the final touches — like adding that last layer of lung maturity, brain growth, or even waiting for your body’s hormones to sync up.

The Baby Is Not Ready Yet — And That’s Okay

Sometimes, baby’s body is sending signals like:

“Hang on, Mum! I’m still putting my finishing touches on this heart rate regulation thing!”

There’s actually fascinating research on this (check out resources like Evidence Based Birth or Cochrane Reviews — both written in plain English, not medical alien). They show that spontaneous labour often begins when the baby’s lungs release a protein that signals your body, “Okay, it’s go time!”

So maybe, just maybe… baby’s lungs haven’t RSVP-ed yet.

And that’s not a bad thing.

Sometimes There’s “Unfinished Business”

I’ve seen this so often as a doula. The body is ready, but the heart… not quite.

Sometimes there’s an emotion we haven’t let go of yet — a fear, an unresolved situation, or even a conversation we’ve been avoiding.

I once had a client (let’s call her M) who was 41 weeks, frustrated, and done with everything. We sat down, and she shared that she hadn’t yet talked to her mum, who lived overseas, about being present for her birth — something that had been quietly bothering her for weeks.

That night, she made the call.
The next morning, her contractions started.

Coincidence? Maybe. But the mind-body connection is real.

Your body holds tension, and labour needs release.
So check in with yourself:

  • Is there something I need to say or forgive?

  • Do I feel safe and supported?

  • Is there a part of me still holding back?

You might be surprised how often emotional clarity helps the body open up, too.

What You Can Do (Without Losing Your Mind)

While you wait, you can:

  • Move gently: Walk, sway, bounce on your birth ball. Maybe even do a bit of "labour dance"

  • Rest: You’ll need that energy soon.

  • Connect: With your baby, your partner, your body.

  • Laugh: Seriously. Laughter releases oxytocin — the same hormone that starts labour!

  • ENJOY: Enjoy these last few days of peace of quiet

If you’re feeling anxious, remind yourself: You are not late. You are right on time for your baby.

When to Call In Support

If your Doctor mentions induction, ask questions. You have the right to understand:

  • What are the medical reasons?

  • Are Mum and baby healthy?

  • Can we wait a few more days and monitor?

You deserve to feel informed and empowered, not pressured.

And if you need a calm, grounded presence to remind you that you’re doing just fine — well, that’s what doulas are for. 😉

Finally....

Your baby knows when to arrive.
Your body knows what to do.
And in the meantime?
Eat that durian. Watch your favourite show. Go for a slow walk. Talk to your baby. Just CHILL and relax...

Because before you know it, you’ll be holding that little human who made you wait…
…and you’ll realise that it was worth every single day.
